Lava Android One smartphone

wpid-devices-id-1

Earlier this month, a report surfaced online claiming that Lava was planning on launching a next-generation Android One smartphone this month. Now, an unannounced smartphone called Iris X5 4G has been spotted online, which could be a part of the aforementioned lineup.

As per the GFX Benchmark listing, the Iris X5 4G is said to sport a 4.6-inch HD (1280×720 pixels) display, and is powered by a 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6735 quad-core processor paired with Mali-T720 GPU and 2GB of RAM. Additionally, the smartphone also features 16GB internal storage, 12-megapixel rear camera, 7-megapixel selfie camera and on the software front, runs on Android 5.1 out-of-the box. While not mentioned in the list, the 4G in the nomenclature could be a hint at its 4G LTE capabilities.

If true, this would be a far cry from the firs-generation Android One smartphones that launched last year. The smartphones launched featured a 4.5-inch FWVGA display, 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6582 quad-core SoC, 1GB of RAM, and 4GB internal storage with microSD card slot. Also included were 5-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel selfie camera, and a 1,700mAh battery. While the smartphones were launched with Android 4.4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box, they have since been updated to Android Lollipop.

The bump in the specifications will also have an effect on the price. Where the first-generation smartphones were priced around the Rs 6,000 mark, Lava’s Android One smartphone is expected to be priced around Rs 12,000.

There is however still no word on when Lava or Google plan on launching the second-generation Android One smartphones.

Micromax’s ultra-affordable smartphone

Micromax-Bolt-S301-official

Micromax has unveiled the Bolt S301 smartphone, in a bid to disrupt the budget market segment. The handset is not a specs beast, which is expected considering the price tag of Rs 2,899. The device will be available for purchase over the coming days from a wide range of retailers countrywide.

The company mentions that the device will be available in a “disruptive pouch packaging”, making it unique among the crowd of the budget handsets that are available today. The company proudly claims that every fourth 3G budget handset purchased in India is Micromax branded, while over 1.5 million phones are sold in the category every month by the company.

The handset can be purchased in White and Black colors when it hits the markets. Much like every smartphone in the range, this one too comes with dual SIM capability built in, which is a very good combination when combined with 3G.

Hardware specifications of the Micromax Bolt S301:

3.5-inch 480×864 resolution display
1.3MP rear camera
VGA front camera
1 GHz single core processor
512MB RAM
4GB internal storage (expandable up to 16GB)
Android 4.4.4 KitKat
3G connectivity with dual SIM support
1,200 mAh battery

It’s quite uncommon for a smartphone which is priced at under Rs 3,000 to offer a front facing video call camera, so the Bolt S301 is an excellent value at this price point. Micromax hasn’t offered clarity on the retail availability of the handset, but since it’s a budget offering, we think it will be sold from a wide range of retailers in the country.

OnePlus 2

Motorola Moto X (2015)

motorola-moto-x

The Moto X was first released in 2013, shortly after Google had acquiredMotorola. It was then succeeded by the second-generation Moto X in 2014.Lenovo has since bought the company and is working on a third Moto X.

The Moto X is something of a cult handset. It has a close to native Android experience, often offering the latest Android updates soon after Google releases them. The Moto X has also been one of the most customisble phones to date, thanks to Moto Maker.

With launch day nearing, we’ve been rounding up all the rumours and leaks to give you an insight of what to expect on launch day.

The launch price for the first Moto X was around £300, while the price for the second one was closer to £420 if buying SIM-free. We’d expect pricing for the third Moto X to fall somewhere in between, though pricing for exisiting Moto X phones has fluctuated drastically since they’ve released due to discounts.

The Moto X typically offers great value for money as a flagship handset (even if you opt to customise with a leather or other finish using Moto Maker). It’s considered an affordable phone without being too budgety – but it has to compete at flagship level.
