What would be your reaction, if you could own one of the most-trafficked domain in the world, Google.com? Ex-Googler can tell you all about it, as he was the lucky buyer and owner of Google.com, albeit for only a minute.

Ex-Googler Sanmay Ved writes about his rather surreal experience of owning one of the world’s most visited websites. Earlier this week, Ved was up late at night learning about Google’s Domains interface, and to his pleasant surprise noticed that the domain Google.com was available. What’s more, he could purchase it for only $12 or Rs 785 approximately.

It must have felt like a big mistake at first, but Ved was able to complete the purchase and suddenly found himself as the owner of Google.com. “I was hoping I would get an error at sometime saying transaction did not go through, but I was able to complete purchase, and my credit card was actually charged!” he wrote.

Immediately after the transaction going through, he noticed that Google.com was added to his Google Domains order history. Furthermore, his Google Search Console dashboard with messages and notifications meant for domain owner. “I started receiving notifications, for when ownership changed (along with new owner details etc.) in the Google Search Console for websites (I will not name them) that are powered by Google Sites (which makes sense given that websites powered by Google Sites rest on the master domain Google.com),” he wrote.

The apparently mistake was quickly rectified, and a minute later he received an order cancellation message from Google Domains. He was also refunded the $12 he paid to buy the domain. It’s not clear what went wrong, and even Google says that it is looking into the matter.

This isn’t the first time Google has faced such domain-related problem. Back in 2003, Microsoft failed to renew its Hotmail UK domain on time, and someone else bought it, Bloomberg reports. Unlike in the above case though, Microsoft had to ask the buyer to return it, and luckily for them he did without any charge.
